Day by day
How the journey unfolds
Days 1–2
Edinburgh
Arrive and settle. The old town early in the morning with a guide, the New Town in the afternoon, dinner somewhere that does not require a view to justify itself.
Days 3–5
North through the Highlands
By car via Perthshire and Speyside. A distillery afternoon, a long walk in Glen Affric, and two nights somewhere with a fire lit whatever the month.
Days 6–9
Small ship through the Hebrides
Board on the west coast. Skye, the Small Isles, Harris and Lewis as the weather permits, with the itinerary set each morning by the skipper rather than in advance.
Days 10–11
Islay or Argyll
Ashore for the last two nights. Whisky properly, or a coastal house and nothing at all — chosen when we plan.
Day 12
Return via Glasgow
A drive south with time built in, and a flight from Glasgow rather than a dash to Edinburgh.
